When should I buy my wedding dress? This is one of the first questions a newly engaged girl asks herself (if no-one else).

The excitement of getting married is so overwhelming that a girl just wants to rush out and buy the dress to see what they will look like on the day. I mean this is the culmination of all they have dreamed about since they were small. This is everything she imagined and discussed with her college girl friends and her mother. It has been the topic of her life and occupied her thoughts for years so it is only natural that she wants to get that gown!

But there is a right time to buy a gown and there are definitely wrong times.

I would never recommend buying your wedding dress a few sizes smaller than you actually are. Yes your intentions are good, you plan to drop a few sizes and have lots of time to do it. And therein lies the rub: the belief that you have lots of time.

What happens in reality is the time between the engagement and the wedding is filled with so many other things to do that it (the time) just seems to fly past. Before you know it you are only 6 months away from the big day. But hey that’s still heaps of time to lose 2 sizes. Wrong! The last 6 months leading up to the wedding are even more frenetic than the previous six months and go even faster.

So if you’re thinking of buying a dress by all means go shopping. But don’t buy. Use the time to study the styles, the fashions, see what new ranges are coming out, what you like and what gowns cost. Stretch this time out as long as possible and enjoy the shopping experience. Make it last as long as you can.

There is such a vast selection and range of prices that you could spend a lifetime just shopping for wedding dresses. And there are of course often beautiful gowns that go for bargain prices. The more time you spend doing the shopping the more you will learn. And by learning you will be happy with the gown that you finally select.

Make it a lot of fun. Take your girlfriends and mum (don’t forget MIL to be as well) on your different shopping trips. They’ll love being involved and giving their input and all will secretly be hoping that the dress they find tucked away in the corner of a shop somewhere is the one you choose.

So when should you buy your wedding dress? Well the right time is when you know you are ready. I started this article by saying: This is one of the first questions a newly engaged girl asks herself (if no-one else).

The reason you ask yourself (if no-one else) is because you know it is too early. When that feeling goes you will know it is the right time and you can go ahead and buy. Yes I have finally given you permission to buy one of those dream creations. Go enjoy yourself!

Oh I almost forgot to mention. Please don’t buy a dress two sizes too small. If you intend losing weight then hold off buying until you get to a point where you know what size you will be on your wedding day. Don’t worry after spending so much time looking at dresses you will have come to realize that YOUR dress is there just waiting for you.

You should buy your wedding dress when you know what size you will be on your wedding day and when know you are ready to buy.
